With so many options available, choosing the right printing option for your order can be a tricky proposition. However, the team at PB is always on hand to provide a little informed advice and often find that the 2 most common branding options are embroidery and screen printing.

What Is The Difference?

Embroidery involves the stitching thread into your chosen garment. Often used to add a logo onto clothing, it is commonly seen on items including sports kits, corporate wear, school wear, uniforms etc.

Screen printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.

To help provide a little further background information, we have drawn up a short list of pros and cons relating to both methods.

Embroidery

Pros:

  • Embroidery is offers a very high quality finish and is therefore ideal for uniforms and corporate wear.
  • Embroidered finishes are extremely durable and tend to last longer than screen printed finishes.
  • Recent development in embroidery machinery has resulted in significantly increased production speed.

Cons:

  • Even with the use of advanced technology, it can be one of the more expensive options.
  • Complex images and very small text may be quite as well represented as when using other methods.

Screen Printing

Pros:

  • Screen printing offers the ideal method for large orders because printing can be completed in bulk very quickly.
  • Complex imagery can comfortably be represented by Printing can create high end products, such as photographs and complex designs, that involve shading and gradients.
  • It can also offer the most cost effective solution for many orders

Cons:

  • Even though screen printing offers a high quality finish, it is not quite on the same level as embroidery which makes it unsuitable for certain projects.
  • The more colours you intend to use, the more expensive it will be.

Screen printing is absolutely perfect to provide the high quality, durable finish that many of our customers desire. Did you know though that this process is far from new? In fact, screen printing was first documented as being used in China during the period AD!!

It is truly amazing to see how the process has evolved over time to be able to produce the stunning results now possible but we thought that it might be interesting to take a look at at how things have moved on.

Screen Printing Buckinghamshire

Early Introduction

Screen printing was largely introduced to Western Europe from Asia sometime in the late 18th century, but did not gain large acceptance or use in Europe until silk mesh was more available for trade from the east and a profitable outlet for the medium discovered.

Early in the 1910s, several printers experimenting with photo-reactive chemicals used the well-known actinic light–activated cross linking or hardening traits of potassium, sodium or ammonium chromate and dichromate chemicals with glues and gelatin compounds.

Roy Beck, Charles Peter and Edward Owens studied and experimented with chromic acid salt sensitized emulsions for photo-reactive stencils. This trio of developers would prove to revolutionize the commercial screen printing industry by introducing photo-imaged stencils to the industry, though the acceptance of this method would take many years.

1960s to Present Day

Moving things to modern day, credit is generally given to the artist Andy Warhol for popularising screen printing as an artistic technique, identified as serigraphy, in the United States. Warhol was supported in his production by master Screen Printer Michel Caza, a founding member of Fespa, and is particularly identified with his 1962 depiction of actress Marilyn Monroe, screen printed in garish colours.

Screen printing lends itself well to printing on canvas. Andy Warhol, Arthur Okamura, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Harry Gottlieb and many other artists have used screen printing as an expression of creativity and artistic vision.

Direct on garment printing has quickly established itself as one of the most popular of our services thanks in no small part to its high quality results and quick turnaround.

Working in a very similar fashion to many of the standard desktop inkjet printers found in homes and offices throughout the world, direct on garment printing machines are bigger but work in a similar way. However, instead of printing on pieces of paper, they instead print the chosen design directly onto the garment itself.

For more information regarding which of these options will provide the best results for your order, please get in touch and we will be happy to provide informed advice once we know your requirements and expectations.

Offering Outstanding Results

Because the ink which is used has an inbuilt fusing agent, it is able to bond directly with the fabric to provide a long lasting finish which will stand the test of time. The result is consistently Staying In Safe Handsexceptionally high quality printing and visually stunning artwork that won’t fade easily in the wash.

Because of the rapidly advancing technology involved in direct on garment t shirt printing, the price has begun to come down accordingly and because of this now offers tremendous value for money.

Options Available

The 2 most popular methods of printing onto clothing includes direct on garment printing and screen printing which are both widely contrasting methods of printing with the common result of offering excellent results.

Due to the very high costs associated with many conventional printing methods, many manufacturers and printers were unable to take on low-volume orders due to the costs which were involved. With direct to garment printing, production runs of just one item are possible, enabling customers to digitally print a single t-shirt for a birthday or graduation, or a business to print a small run of t-shirts for a promotion.

Is it time for a change of direction in regards to your company's uniform? If so, there are a few things to factor into your decision making progress before you will be ready to move forward.

To help speed things along we have drawn up a list of 3 of the most important factors.

1. What Are Your Aims For Your New Uniform?

This may sound quite basic but you need to have a firm grasp on what you are actually looking for from your new uniform. Is advertising/marketing important to you? Is the comfort of your 3 Tips To Help Choose Your New Clothing Rangeemployees top of your list? Are you looking for a complete change from your current uniform?

You also need to determine who you are designing for. What’s the age range? Male, female or both?

Top Tip - Always think with a long term view in mind if possible, you don't want to be re-visiting this too soon.

2. Choose the Right Items of Clothing

With so many different items of clothing which can branded up with your design, it is important to decide just which items may be useful. Would a range of polo shirts be enough or do you need to go a little further? T-Shirts, Hoodies, Tops, Trousers etc can all be branded with your logo, designs and strapline if required.

3. Create Mockups and Ask For Feedback

Whilst your new design is very likely to be something you will be very proud of, it's always important to check with the people who will actually be wearing it! As such, just because you think something looks great, does not guarantee that everyone will feel the same.

E-mailing trusted friends, your staff etc and asking for feedback (and then listening to it!) is a great way to ensure that you choose a design that is well liked by the people that matter.

Top Tip - Honest feedback is essential! If you are canvasing the opinions of your staff your staff, be prepared to hear things that you may not like! Don't penalise your staff for speaking there mind when that is exactly what you have asked them to do!!

Creating The Right Impression

Embroidery creates an impression of quality and style. Excellent for polos, jackets, caps, knitwear etc. Embroidery will normally outlast any garment onto which it is applied.

Recent advances in embroidery software mean that design /set up costs can be low and the new generation of embroidery machines run quickly with any number of colours being applied in a single operation. However large designs can be time consuming to produce and so costs can increase significantly relative to the size.
